A week before the Charleston church shooting, an assistant superintendent of schools in the state’s largest city, Sanford, had his office evacuated for a meeting with a county deputy chief of police and his chief of staff, according to a sheriff’s office spokesman.

Two days after the shooting, police announced that they had found no gun at the church.

On the morning of June 16, at least three people died and four were hospitalized after a gunman opened fire in the historic church.

In the days following the shooting there were conflicting reports about the extent of the gunman’s rampage.

According to the Associated Press, some officials said he opened fire after shooting his estranged wife, but others said he began firing after the couple’s four-year-old daughter, who was in the church, tried to flee.

The FBI is investigating the shooting.

In interviews with the AP, officials in Sanford said that they believed the gunman, Dylann Roof, had been targeted and had been carrying out a “premeditated attack.”

Police did not say whether Roof was armed.

In an interview with Fox News, one of the sheriff’s deputies who was at the scene that morning said he was not aware of any weapons at the meeting.

He said he believed the shooter was a white man in his 20s who lived in the town of about 300 people and had a history of mental illness.
